New! Rainforests

An artist's impression of the new learning space in African Forest at Bristol Zoo Project, a modern-style classroom with children facing a smart board..This session is taught in our brand new African Forest Classroom, with a view into the gorilla gym.

In our brand-new African Forest Classroom, next to our troop of gorillas, discover the sounds, smells and animals of the African jungle. Students will learn how rainforests provide food and shelter for humans and animals. They will learn how we can protect rainforests, before trying out some animal movements like gorilla knuckle walking!

Students will:

  • Identify sounds and smells of rainforests

  • Learn about rainforest plants and animals

  • Understand that rainforests are important for animals and people

  • Identify how they can help conserve rainforest habitats

Minibeast Exploration

(Available April - July)

Find out about bugs and their habitats before going on a real minibeast hunt! Pupils discover different groups of minibeasts and get to grips with using bug pots, magnifying glasses and identification charts.

Students will learn to:

  • Understand that the term ‘minibeasts’ describes animals without a backbone

  • Describe some features and habitats of different minibeasts

  • Use simple equipment to collect and observe a range of British minibeasts

Wildly Creative

Pupils explore colours, patterns and textures in nature, using the natural materials around them to create a variety of seasonal art.

Students will learn to:

  • Use a range of senses in physical activities and challenges

  • Use a range of natural materials creatively

  • Produce artwork considering colour, pattern and texture

Key stage 1 Art

African Safari

Visit our African village and discover real African animals including giraffes, zebras and cheetahs. Through outdoor activities such as games and a team challenge puzzle, find out how animals live in the grassland, how they rely on each other for survival, and the threats to this delicate balance.

Students will learn about:

  • Adaptations of savannah animals

  • Savannah food chains

  • Threats to African wildlife and conservation methods

Wild about Wolves

Learn the truth about wolves, discover why wolves howl and find your ‘pack’ by smell alone. Through a series of games, your group will find out about wolf adaptation and take part in the predator-prey challenge!

Students will learn to:

  • Describe the adaptations and behaviour of wolves

  • Describe why wolves and other animals became extinct in the UK

  • Suggest how to preserve the remaining forests in the UK

Amazing Madagascar

In our Madagascar Schoolhouse, next to the lemurs and spotted deer, students discover the unique species of the world’s fourth largest island, through real biofacts and interactive activities.

Students will learn:

  • To identify Madagascar's location, habitats and some animals

  • To describe the causes of habitat destruction

  • To suggest why it is important to conserve habitat in Madagascar and at home

Animal Detectives

Introducing classification with a range of animal artefacts and an engaging detective hunt, exploring the features of different animals.

Students will learn to:

  • Group animals according to their similarities

  • Group animals which are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, minibeasts or fish

  • Recognise some features of each class
